Our Story

The cemetery is located on the site of a former Danish Lutheran church established in 1894 and disbanded in 1964. The Hazelwood Cemetery Association was formed by the members of the church to make sure the site remained a place of peace to honor the lives and memories of already buried there, and continues to serve that purpose for others. As a nonprofit, the cemetery benefits not only the descendants of it's founders, but more importantly all other souls without regard to race, creed, or religion. The cemetery is non-denominational; all are welcome.

Policies for Burial

1.) Body Disposition Allowed: a. Traditional embalming with casket and vault (one per plot), b. Cremains, with or without container, but interred (two burials per cemetery plot), c. Natural burial without casket or vault in established plots (one per plot).

2.) Caskets are not allowed with Natural burials.

3.) Cremains must be interred in the ground. An urn is not required

4.) The only plots available are those that have been platted. More will be added as needed. There are currently no restrictions on size of monuments, but they must be placed on a footing and located by a cemetery official.

Prices: $750 for descendants of members; $1000 for all others

Maintenance of the grounds is the responsibility of the cemetery board. Lawn mowing is contracted. Other services are hired as needed. These are covered by the purchase price and donations.

5.) Other *Fees Include: Grave Opening - $900, Staking Fee for Grave Location - $100, Staking Fee for Monument Location - $25.

*all fees are subject to change

6.) Cemetery costs are itemized.

7.) Designated grave plots are not taxed but become the property of the purchaser subject to the rules of the cemetery and Minnesota Law.

8.) Currently, there is not an area specifically designated for the scattering of cremains. However, we are discussing the creation of an area bordering the pond at the back of the property to serve this purpose. We are hopeful this option is available in the near future.

9.) Public graveside services and rituals are permitted but there is no building that can be used for private viewing.

10.) The state of Minnesota currently require a burial permit for internment. While a burial permit is not required for cremains, the cemetery has in each case been given, at our request, the cremation permit or certificate.

11.) There is no cemetery requirement for an outer burial container. In the case of natural burials, no casket or vault allowed. Other than that, it is the desire of the cemetery to respect the wishes of the survivors in this matter. A bier or shroud may be interred with the body, as long as it does not prevent soil from coming in contact with the body.
